This one is about something we're releasing alongside it: the 2026 Business Rules Engines Comparison Guide, a decision-maker's reference for insurers evaluating BRE platforms this year.
Why a comparison guide, not another feature post
Insurers choosing a business rules engine are not filling in a checklist. The decision shapes time-to-market, regulatory posture, and total cost of ownership for years - and most of the material available to support that decision is either vendor marketing or outdated. We built this guide to give underwriting, product, data science, and architecture teams a structured, criteria-based starting point before they sit down with any vendor, including us.
What's inside
The guide evaluates seven business rules engines used across the insurance industry today - Higson, Drools, InRule, Camunda, FICO Blaze Advisor, Pega, and IBM ODM - against eleven criteria that matter to insurers in 2026:
- Rule import and export, and how much of it business teams can do without IT
- Deployment speed, from a single rule change to a full implementation
- Integration depth, including AI/ML support and agent-facing tooling

The timing isn't a coincidence. Several of the criteria in the guide - AI-assisted rule authoring, model explainability, granular permissions - map directly to what Higson 4.3 just added. The guide reflects the platform as it stands today, including the AI Assistant now running in Studio (beta) and the performance numbers we stand behind in any PoC: 0.23 ms average rule execution and 9,000 requests per second. At TUW, moving a new motor-insurance rating rule from idea to production dropped from two weeks to two hours - one of the three case studies covered in more depth inside the guide.
Why this matters: Regulatory readiness and AI governance are no longer optional line items in a BRE evaluation - they're deciding factors. This guide treats them as core criteria, not a footnote, for every engine covered, not just Higson.
